In the northern latitudes the Banyan Tree is known as "Ficus" in the flowerpot, in the tropics, he is revered, loved and feared. In India , the Banyan Tree has enormous cultural importance. After Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Berlin, Tahiti, Cook Islands, Fiji and Fürth, Germany, Varanasi is the 8th station of the worldwide touring exhibition THE BANYAN TREE, it shows paintings, sculptures, videos, photos and installations by more than 50 artists from 20 countries. The art works have been collected by the German media artist Alfred Banze. Inspired from these artworks, he organized numerous workshops for children and young people in schools, galleries, cultural centers and artists' studios in many countries arround the globe. The now displayed exhibition shows both, the original artworks and the „remixes“ by children and young people, all inspired by the Banyan Tree.
Madan Lal Gupta, Ananda Surya, Rainbow Children and Sanchayan Chakma represent the lifely Indian art scene. Also on display are selected results from Banyan Workshops at BHU Art Department, Gangotri School Varanasi, and a small primary school in the northern part of the town.
